Mission

The University of Chicago Medical Center is continually advancing medical care and seeking new ways to improve the health of its patients. In fact, nearly eleven Nobel Laureates have been students, faculty or researchers at the Medical Center and have helped shape its mission of bringing medical and scientific discovery to the bedside. This rich history of providing technologically advanced medicine rooted in groundbreaking scientific breakthroughs is at the heart of the Medical Center’s latest clinical endeavor at 150 East Huron.

Modern Medicine

The University of Chicago Medical Center provides the region’s highest ranked patient care and now some of our most renowned specialties are available at 150 East Huron. At our new downtown facility many of our best doctors will deliver comprehensive, coordinated medicine that defines the standard of customized, personal preventive care. World-renowned experts in cardiology, endocrinology, dermatology, executive health, pulmonary and sleep medicine work collaboratively to personalize healthcare by ascertaining each patient’s risk factors for disease. After assessment and testing; a clear, concise and personalized plan is created to reduce patient risks through sustainable lifestyle changes. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, the care plan emphasizes all elements of a patient’s life; from genetic/genomic makeup to environmental risk factors; fully tailored to each individual’s unique risk and circumstance. The result is improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment for patients.

“This project is a natural outgrowth of the University of Chicago Medical Center’s legacy of driving innovation in medicine through research and education,” says Joe G.N. “Skip” Garcia, the Lowell T. Coggeshall Professor of Medicine. “Our physicians are involved in reaching important scientific discoveries that translate into improved care for patients. They also regard empowering patients through effective communication and education as a critical component of care.”

The Nation’s Best

Out of more than 5,450 hospitals across the United States, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Chicago Medical Center 17th overall in 2008, placing it in the top one-half of one percent and on the magazine’s “Honor Roll” of America’s best hospitals. The Medical Center is the only Illinois hospital ever to be included in this prestigious list and has appeared on the list 11 times since 1995.

Seven programs, including digestive disorders, endocrinology, cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, heart and heart surgery, kidney disease, and ear, nose and throat were ranked in the top 25 nationwide. Geriatrics, respiratory and gynecology scored in the top 35. These programs attract patients with complex illnesses from all over the country. Chicago area patients can now access several of these programs and the physician experts who lead them at 150 East Huron.
